The community of Burke is named after the early politician Silas Burke. He once owned a great deal of land in the area and built his home which still stands today. This community’s name is a constant reminder of the rich historical roots this area has. It is just a short drive to many wonderful historical sites both in Washington D.C. and in the surrounding communities.
Burke Lake Park is a great place to visit for some weekend relaxing. It features campgrounds, mini golf, a marina with fishing opportunities and a variety of trails. Children love the carousel and mini train located in the park and Golfers can hit the links at the Burke Lake Golf Course, an 18 hole par 3 course. Young or old, there’s something for everyone in this local park.
Burke has many fitness opportunities for those looking to stay in shape. The area has several gyms including Onelife Fitness and Olympus Fitness. There are multiple pools in the area operated by Burke Centre. Additionally you’ll find beautiful running trails, biking paths and a wealth of other fitness opportunities. Bikers will enjoy the many beautiful trails offered by Fairfax County including an outdoor trail around Burke Lake.
From May to November residents of Burke can stock up on fresh fruits and veggies at the Burke Farmers Market and also enjoy the annual Burke Centre Festival held each September. Burke Nursery and Garden Centre hosts an annual pumpkin patch and festival that is the fall highlight for many area children. Neighboring areas also have many fun festivals and events which Burke residents can often enjoy.
There are many tasty dining opportunities in Burke. Spartan’s Family Restaurant is a community favorite offering Greek fare and for great Italian you can head to Villa Bella. Other restaurants in the area include Anita’s, Burke Garden, Cedar Café and more. Just a short drive away you’ll find a delicious Swiss Bakery and many other fine dining establishments from local restaurants to popular chains.
If you love to shop, head to the Burke Centre Shopping Center where you’ll find a Kohl’s, a Safeway and more than 40 other shops. There are large shopping malls in nearby Fairfax and Tyson’s Corner as well.
Burke residents often live in the area and commute to Washington D.C. Although Burke itself does not have a Metro station, you can access the Metro from nearby Vienna or Fairfax. Burke does however have Metrobus services and a VRE station. Traffic getting in and out of Washington D.C. can be challenging. Most people recommend utilizing public transportation, especially the Metro or VRE to avoid long waits in the traffic at peak time.
The schools in the area are run by Fairfax County Public Schools, a highly regarded school district. Burke has several great schools as well as a few public libraries.
